mirena complications...

hi,

i had my mirena inserted at the end of july. since then i've gained about 15 lbs., have had joint and back pain, and feel emotionally unstable. i've tried to adjust my diet, do yoga, drink moon cycle tea but nothing is helping and i'm seriously considering having my mirena removed. has anyone else experienced a similar situation? anything that helped? if you've had your mirena removed, what form of birth control did you switch to?

thanks!

i had my mirena for about 8 months, and i spotted really randomly the whole time. i might have had 10 days total in 8 months that i wasn't spotting. i really liked it besides that, but i couldn't handle the spotting (my husband didn't mind it with regards to sex, but it made me horribly itchy), so i had it taken out. :( my husband ended up getting a vasectomy about 4 months before i had it taken out, so i'm not currently on birth control anymore.

I had the mirena for about 6 months and then hda it taken out, it made my anxiety & panic attacks worse & emotionally I felt wacked. I tried soo many things to combat it, like you had but in the end I was tired of feeling the way I was so I had it taken out.

I went back to charting/NFP. It's just easier for me & my lifestyle. We then decided to get pg & now my husband is getting a vasectomny, so sorry I'm not much help in that area, good luck!

do you have any suggestions on how to chart, or sites that you found useful?

Sure! I've been charting for nearly 12 years now so I know it well. I HIGHLY recomend you get Toni Weschler's books Taking Charge of Your Ferility. She also has a website http://www.tcofy.com

I really like the BD thermometer for taking my temperature, it's pink & very accurate. I've used it for years and years.

If you have anymore questions feel free to ask me! I'm usually around. On the tcoyf website my username is Chasing~Flutterbies so feel free to contact me there too, or on my personal LJ :) Good luck hun!!

Out of curiosity, what did you use for contraception before and how long did you stop using it before getting your mirena?

Well, I'm not going to say it's impossible to experience hormonal side effects from Mirena, because while it happens to very few women, it certainly does happen. But what I think is more likely is something that I know happened to many women in the IUD community I belong to who have gone straight from HBC to IUD; it may not be going on the IUD but coming off HBC that is your problem.

I got mine (Paragard, mind you) after going through some non-HBC related hormone wonkiness, and it took about a year for my system to fully regulate. It may be your Mirena, but considering that that's a tiny device with a tiny quantity of hormones that exists outside your bloodstream, versus the daily dose of hormones you were previously directly ingesting, I'd wait it out and see if it was the latter and not the former causing your problems.

I've never had a Mirena because I won't go anywhere near hormones, no matter how "low" they are. (As you now understand, because you're having some side effects.... MAN how much my MIL, an OBGYN nurse, tried to convince me to get a Mirena)
But I wanted to say that I have a Paragard, the hormone-free IUD (that lasts twice as long!)... so if you end up having to have your Mirena removed, you can get a Paragard instead.

You can also look into FAM, an ovulens, Lea's Shield, or a cervical cap.
Or... if your partner is long-term and he doesn't want kids in the future, a vasectomy.... (but I guessing that option's not for you at this time)
